Paper in the News: Non-Wood Paper and Verso Interest

An Oregon paper mill company has successfully created a new, non-wood paper product that uses agricultural waste to produce paper. The West Linn-based Willamette Falls Paper Company made its first non-wood paper product using pulp from wheat straw fibers. The new product uses 10% of fibers which are collected from the shaft of the wheat and broken down into microscopic fibers, which are then used to make both coated and uncoated paper. The mill is expected to start making its new product available to customers by the end of November. In other paper news…Atlas Holdings appears to be interested in possibly acquiring Verso, North America’s largest coated printing and writing paper producer, according to contacts and SEC filings.  Filings show that in September, Atlas and Blue Wolf Capital together invested about $2.8 million to acquire 246,097 shares of common stock in Verso. Contacts claimed that their ownership share in Verso could now be at least 10%.
